Personal interviews were done with 76 athletes (sports group), i.e. 33 twin basket wheelchair basketball players (C5-6 tetraplegia : 32, CP : 1), 21 Boccia players (CP : 20, PMD : 1), 11 Electric Wheelchair Football players (CP : 4, PMD : 3, C5-6 tetraplegia : 2, Polio : 1, Spina bifida : 1), 7 Swimmers (CP : 5, C5-6 tetraplegia : 1, Polio : 1), 3 Archer (C5-6 tetraplegia : 3), 1 Wheelchair marathon runner (C5-6 tetraplegia : 1) (sports group) and 24 persons who has no sports habit (no sports group) were employed for this study. Sports are a significant way for persons with severe disabilities to re-establish their own identity and promote a social life. When no sports group was compared with sports group, the condition of health was better, and some job rates were high, and a yearly income was high in sports group. Sports have the function which is similar to the self-help group. Also, sports have the empowerment function helping persons with severe disabilities to reach their full potential.
